Brooke Cricket Club - Sunday XI

`What a successful season for the Sunday Team. On a personal level I was proud to Skipper the team in my 50th year leading the team to the Division 3 Title. Thank you to everyone who represented the team this season. It was interesting to captain the side with such a mixture of youth and experience. Among our best achievements in my view was winning games where we had what we perceived to be a weaker side, thanks I believe to our excellent togetherness and team spirit and good individual performances. I am not going to single out individuals because I think everyone contributed whether it was by scoring runs, taking wickets and catches, or saving runs in the field.

As well as the success on the field we also enjoyed a great social spirit, which has been remarked on by players and spectators alike.  Our record for socialising at the bar was 11.20pm, even then we had to force Ray to go home. Another fantastic memory was when adults and children `arranged an after match game` bowling at batsmen using a chair for stumps in front of the patio. This went on well into darkness as everyone was having so much fun enjoying a lovely day and a beautiful Summer`s evening.

A final thank you for something which is often taken for granted. The task of doing the `backroom` work of preparing the pitch, bar, pavilion and tea`s etc. Thank you for everyone who supported the team in this regard. In my view this is as equally important to the success of the club as contributions made on the field.`

Brooke CC vs Sprowston Lady Mary Round1

After winning the toss, Brooke elected to bat on a lovely summer's day and a flat wicket. After losing Ben Prentice early, some lusty blows from Rob Borges and Ed Sturman  got Brooke off to a great start. The departure of Ed brought Chris Sheehy (62) to the crease who played a very mature innings and combined with the skipper (82) to take Brooke over 200. With wickets in hand, the Brooke run rate accelerated near the end and we ended with 280 from our 45 overs.

The Sprowston chase got off to a flying start as they reached 80 from just 11 overs until a crucial run out from Ed. From there the innings capitualted due to a fine spell from Stuart Pritty and some excellent fielding from the Brooke lads leaving Sprowston  all out for 140.

Brooke CC vs Dereham Lady Mary QF

An uncovered wicket left Brooke with no option but to bowl on a pudding at Dereham. Monkey got the team off to a great start with an early wicket and a great spell of 9 overs going for only 20. Wickets fell regularly through the middle stages during impressive spells from John Habershon (2/30) and Olly Stamp (4/30) and Dereham were restricted to 160.

The Brooke run chase started steadily through the efforts of Daynesy and Habi. We were wobbling at 80/4 but Ed and Vinay (69) managed to see us through to the end with a solid 40* and we knocked the total off with 5 wickets in hand and plenty of overs to spare.

Brooke CC vs Acle Umpires Plate SF

On a lovely sunday afternoon, Brooke lost the toss and were put into the field. Ed and SP had Acle in trouble early and managed to grab a wicket each. A solid 3rd wicket partnership followed taking Acle to 130/2 at drinks. A double bowling change brought about the double blow as Chris Sheehy took a spectacular caught and bowled to remove the Acle pro. Wickets then fell steadily and Acle had a mini collapse and only managed 230.

The batting was centred about John Habershon's fine innings of 89. There were useful contributions from Shearer (20), Sturman (16), Parikh (40) who partnered with John to take Brooke to 200. The departure of John left Ben Prentice (18*) and Stuart Pritty (10*) to see off the final runs and ensure a 4 wicket victory and a spot in the umpires plate Final.

Match Report - Carter Cup vs Norwich & Coltishall Wanderers (home)

Norwich and Coltishall Wanderers beat Brooke by 39 runs in the first round of the Carter Cup. Brent Bragge, NCW’s new overseas player, scored 90 in 106 balls and helped them to a total of 274 for 8 in 60 overs. We were bowled out in 56 overs for 235, with Rob Panter hitting 52, Vinay Parikh 44 and Chris Sheehy 38. There was an unusual incident after Brooke had been batting for 2.3 overs – it was discovered that NCW had 12 men on the field! The umpires decided to award us 15 penalty runs, which resulted in the scorer having a few problems with the laptop.
